Friday 12th April: Yordas Cave

Meet 2:00pm at Yordas Cave, near Ingleton OS grid ref SD 7055 7905.

Experience an underground Limestone Cave. Torch and wellingtons are ESSENTIAL, limited to 12 members - book by email to

Friday 3rd May: Nosterfield Nature Reserve

Meet 2:00pm at Nosterfield Nature Reserve Car Park

West Tanfield DL8 2QX.

Walk to visit Lower Ure Conservation Trust wild plant nursery to hear about the vast quantities of sedges grown from seed to restore a fen at this important wetland grassland and also calcareous flowers to restore the neighbouring hedges.

Thursday 9th May: Redmire

Meet 10:30am at Hargill Lane, Redmire, (near railway)

Approx 2 miles gentle walking to Castle Bolton, return on quiet roads, to see spring flowers, new woodland and pasture. Boggy in places. With the possibility of lunch at the newly re-opened Redmire Village Pub. Limited parking, please car share.

Thursday 16th May: Scorton Lakes

Meet 10:00am at Scorton Lakes South Car Park

3-4 mile easy walk, (2-2.5 hours) around various lakes and paths bird watching, including summer migrants, plus flowers, butterflies and dragonflies, weather permitting.

Meet 2:00pm at Jervaulx Abbey Car Park (opposite side of road to Abbey)

Tuesday 25th June: Deer Walk

Meet 10:30am at Fountains Abbey Visitor Centre Car Park,

HG4 3DY. OS grid ref SE 272 687.

A walk of about 2.5 miles through Studley Royal Deer Park, hearing about and seeing the three species of deer who roam here and looking at the magnificent parkland. Free access to the walk, café, and facilities at the Visitor Centre.

With an opportunity to afterwards visit the Abbey and Grounds National Trust, free to members, payable charge for others.

Meet 10:30am or 2:00pm (book slot to limit trampling) at Weybeck Pasture, near Arnecliffe OS grid ref SD 968 692,

Described as “Botanical Heaven” by YWT, with wildflowers, butterflies, grasses and mosses.

Saturday July 13th: Bishop Middleham Quarry

Nature Reserve

Meet at 2:00pm at Bishop Middleham Quarry Nature Reserve, DL17 9EE.

Managed by Durham Wildlife Trust, this nine hectare SSSI of magnesian limestone grassland supports a profusion of species including Dark Red Helleborine and Northern Brown Argus Butterfly. Easy walking, the visit could last over two hours with so much to see.

Meet at 10:00am in Horsehouse Village Hall (refreshments and toilets available)

Anne will have put out a Moth Trap the previous night and we will be looking at some of the weird and wonderful specimens found. Bring a packed lunch. This event is weather-dependent, if too poor for moth trapping all YNHS members will be notified by email by 7pm on Friday 2nd August - please check your email.
